Mark Webber is a proper bloke, unlike the sterile robots that make up half the F1 field. He's got a 10 place grid drop penalty for the next race in Korea following his taxi ride on Alonso's Ferrari.

Mark has been tweeting some pretty funny stuff today, and Alonso has pitched in too. I've saved !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Since I don't have access to twitter I don't know what those tweets say, but to be completely honest the penalty was fully deserved. Alonso came to a complete stop in a blind section of the track. Webber entered the track despite being told by marshalls that it was not safe to do so. Webber nearly got hit by both Rosberg and Hamilton who had to swerve to avoid Alonso/Webber.

If Alonso pulls off to the side in an area that is not a problem no harm no foul. The FIA doesn't even reprimand either of them if that is what happens. But that isn't what happened.

He wasn't punished for the ride. He was punished for splitting the Mercs. Alonso stopped in the racing line. They both only received reprimands. It just happened to be Webber's third one.

I think it was a great sporting moment and made some great TV, but it could have, and should have, been done in a safer way.

Ha! Fernando's pic is awesome. Surely he didn't make that himself?

Read my comment above. In this case the penalty was fully warranted and to be honest they got off easy with a reprimand.

Paging McMike. Duty calls and this shop needs a shop. For the record I like it SM, it just needs McMike's patented no eyebrows Alonso.

I know I know, it was deserved, and seemed to be fairly risky/dangerous.

It just seems like any more racing, at least in terms of F1, is nothing but rules and penalties. Yes most are in the interest of safety, but I feel it detracts from the overall series. Its not as interesting to watch any more, as driver skill seems to be decreasingly important, as the differences in the cars themselves already play into advantages.

I know, flame on, but I just don't think its anywhere as fun to watch as it used to be. Heck, we don't even get F1 coverage any more, but I struggle to even find a reason to stream it online.

The racing this year hasn't been as good as last year, but to be completely honest the racing last year was awesome. Probably the best in 15 years. Not sure if you've watched the same series I have. I guess not. This year has been a mess.

I haven't kept up with F1 seriously for any season, living in the US its not really a mainstream thing. By no means am I a Nascar fan though, for me racing is generally more interesting to watch highlights of after the fact.

I made an effort to watch the entire LM24 this year though, and I have to say, even though I only had RadioLM for a good portion of it, I certainly enjoyed it, even if I was rooting for Toyota, simply because I wanted to see Audi have some competition, and they certainly put up a fight.

Except for the fact that he didn't get the reprimand for hitching a ride, but for creating a potentially dangerous situation and entering the track without permission of the marshalls.

I like Mark, but the stewards were right this time.

There's as much F1 coverage in the U.S. as there is for any other series not named NASCAR. Honestly I think Diffey, Hobbes, and matchett do a great job. If you used to be a fan but haven't paid much attention I think your previous comments are a bit ignorant. I'm completely serious when I tell you that the actual on track product last year was the best I've ever seen in F1. I've only been following F1 relatively closely for about 15 years though.

Well as I'm 20, school and work tend to get in the way. Not trying to be ignorant, and I certainly agree it was awesome, just trying to reignite my own interest for the sport.

If I understand correctly, the race was still on, right? As in, there were still cars on the track in competition mode? And Webber went out into the track, on foot, to hitch a ride?

Sounds like a serious safety concern, and a reasonable cause for a penalty. I'm not necessarily agreeing with the actual penalty - I know very little about the rules of F1 racing - but it looks like the FIA was right to penalize this action, whether or not the stewards/marshalls told him to do otherwise.

I dont think they over reacted, they were stop after a turn, anyone coming couldn't see them until after. It could have easily been an ugly situation. Alonzo should have pulled complete off the track or out of the driving line of the other cars...had he done that the FIA wouldn't be bitching. It wasn't safe period. Neither of us would do this on civilian roads... The 2 of them are acting like children. Just case nothing bad happened doesn't mean its ok...
